3.3 翻译方法讨论
3.3.1增译与减译
研究发现，有时候原文用了“同比”或“环比”，但译文中没有直接传达“同比”或“环比”的信息；或者原文没用“同比”或“环比”，而译文字面却有。这就是翻译的语境问题。原文有而译文无，是因为译文语境可以暗示其义；原文无而译文有，是因为原文语境已暗示其义。例如：
（28）Volumes at the two main ports in nearby Shenzhen – Yantian and Shekou – are down 13 per cent and 24 per cent, respectively.
深圳市的两个主要港口——盐田港和蛇口港——的吞吐量,则分别同比下降13%和24%。
上例是《金融时报》上一篇题为“Growth Story amid Trouble in the Delta”（ 参见
http://www.ftchinese.com/story/001030009/ce）中的一个句子。该句前面有一句：“Container throughput volumes in Hong Kong are down about 17 per cent year-on-year”，其中的year-on-year告诉我们，上例所提到的下降是同比下降。有上下文暗示的省略不难理解，难的是无上下文暗示的省略。此时我们只有从文章语境之外去寻找答案。例如《金融时报》上有这样一个句子：
（29）Growth slowed to close to zero in the fourth quarter of last year and in February exports tumbled 26 per cent.
去年第四季度中国经济环比增长接近于零，而今年2月份出口下降了26%。
此例是Geoff Dyer 一篇题为“Hesitating to Take on Global Leadership”（参见
http://www.ftchinese.com/story/001025660/en）中的一个句子，发表于2009年4月4日，主题与中国有关。例中“slowed to close to zero”为何译为“环比增长接近于零”？搜遍整个文章也不见蛛丝马迹。我们只有从中国实际经济状况中求解。例中“last year”显然指2008年。据国家统计局网站数据，2008年第三季度GDP为76548亿元，同比增长9%；第四季度GDP为97019亿元，同比增长6.8%。结合这四个数据，我们就不难理解上例中的“slowed”指增长速度放缓，由9%下降到6.8%，而“close to zero”似指国内生产总值2008年第四季度与第三季度相比（即环比）增加微乎其微，但实际情况是第四季度GDP有明显增加，增加值为97019亿元－76548亿元=20471亿元。Geoff Dyer有些夸大其词。
增译与减译是一对可以相互转换的翻译方法。换言之，如果英译汉用增译，那么将中文译回成英文，则用减译。结合翻译实践看，例（28）因为前文有交代而省略了year-on-year，可以实现语言的精练。而例（29）的省略则破坏了语言的明晰性，笔者不赞同此类省略。
3.3.2转换
因为“环比”是连续两个月或季度的比较，所以涉及到“环比”的语境，有时可进行时间转换，如将“五月”转换为“六月”，将“第一季度”转换为“第二季度”等。例如：
（30）Imports rose 15.6 per cent from May, while declining 13.2 per cent year on year.
6月份进口环比增长15.6%，与去年同比下降13.2%。（或译：进口较5月份环比增长15.6%，与去年同比下降13.2%。）
（31）Net income was $123.5m, rising 74.3 per cent from the first quarter and 118.5 per cent from the same period in 2009.
第二季度净利润为1.235亿美元，环比增长74.3%，同比激增118.5%。（或译：净利润为1.235亿美元，较第一季度环比增长74.3%，同比激增118.5%。）
